Learning About Peru

On Friday, Henniker's own Dan Paul held K-8 students and teachers spellbound with his amazing photo-tour of Peru. Here are some of the children (and a dog) who were affected by the 2007 earthquake in Chincha:

We also saw views of:
  • Cities like Cusco (the ancient capital of the Incan empire)
  • Ruins like Machu-Picchu
  • Lake Titicaca (at 13,000 feet elevation, complete with floating islands!)
  • The mysterious desert lines of Nazca
  • The 2007 earthquake damage in Chincha Alta
Dan also explained a local project to help the people of Chincha Alta rebuild. Thanks for teaching us so much, Dan!

Peru Slideshow Friday

Here's an exciting chance to learn more about our South American neighbors:

Peru Travel & Reconstruction Slideshow
by Dan Paul
Friday, April 4
12:30-1:30

All H.I.S. students, parents, families, and friends are invited to attend. Dan Paul (of Henniker) will present photographs from his January, 2008 tour of the mountains, forests, deserts, towns, and cities of Peru. He will also present about the communities devastated by the August, 2007 earthquake, and tell about his current project to help the community of Chincha Alta, Peru rebuild.

To learn more about the Peru Reconstruction Project, visit their blog:

Project organizers are currently looking for supporters and volunteers to help with their construction brigade in May and June. H.I.S. is a partner in the project.

Holiday Tea CD Available

Our CD is now complete, and features all students in grades K-8. You can now view a complete list of the tracks (including which class sings which song).

You can also hear some samples of the songs on Marek's blog!

Each participating student received a copy of the CD. We're also taking orders for the CDs. (They make such great gifts!) We ask that you make a donation to our project for each CD you order (you decide how much), and the money we raise goes to the H.I.S. Playground Fund.

To order your extra copies, or to volunteer to burn some copies for the class, please email Marek.

Fall Clean-Up Day Report

We had perfect weather for our Fall Clean-Up Day on Friday! Here are a few of the jobs we completed:

Amoskeag students raked the lawn in front of the school.
Ossippee students "mucked" the sheep pen.
Soonipi students cleaned the driveway gardens, re-graded the edges of the parking lot, and harvested our worm castings.
Monadnock students cleaned the vegetable gardens and raked the sheep's grazing yard. (Leaves aren't good for the sheep to eat!)
We all pitched in and moved brush, sand, compost, and vegetables to get ready for the coming cold season.

Thanks to all the parents who helped out, sent tools, and supported our workday!

For more photos and reports, you can visit the individual class pages.
